From Flippers to Fragments - Four Seasons Resorts Maldives Marks 15 Years of Marine Conservation and 9,000 Coral Frames

At Four Seasons Resorts Maldives - across the pristine waters of Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru - sustainability isn’t a department. It’s a philosophy, a design principle, and a brand promise. This year, the resort group proudly celebrates two defining milestones: 15 years of the Maldivian Sea Turtle Conservation Programme (MSTCP) and the installation of its 9,000th coral frame, in partnership with Reefscapers.

Designing a Future Beneath the Surface

It began in 2010 with the inauguration of the Maldives’ first Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Landaa Giraavaru. Since then, more than 500 sea turtles have been rescued and treated, with 280+ released back into the wild. Simultaneously, a visionary coral restoration model - designed with oceanographer Thomas Le Berre - introduced a method of affixing coral fragments to metal frames on the ocean floor.

The result: one of the largest artificial reef structures in the Indian Ocean, now thriving across 3.05 acres.

From underwater ultrasound scanners to laser therapy and general anaesthesia, the MSTCP blends cutting-edge medical technology with marine empathy. Meanwhile, the coral frames serve as a living invitation - drawing turtles, eagle rays, and reef sharks - proving how restored habitats support natural recovery.

The iconic Flying Turtles initiative, launched in 2016, provides new homes for irreversibly injured turtles at international oceanariums. Among them was Trooper, a juvenile Olive Ridley turtle who lost both front flippers to ghost nets. After receiving 3D-printed prosthetics, Trooper became a global symbol of what innovation and care can achieve - echoing the resilience seen in every coral fragment that grows into a flourishing reef.

Educating the Future, One Guest at a Time

The Junior Marine Savers program at Kuda Huraa welcomes young guests into the world of conservation, while the broader Marine Savers team partners with local schools, NGOs, and global institutions to ignite awareness and action. This dual milestone reflects a journey not only of ecosystem restoration - but of nurturing the next generation of ocean protectors.

A Commitment That Runs as Deep as the Ocean

“These 15 years have been a journey of learning, innovation, and hope. From our first rescued turtle to our 9,000th coral frame, we remain committed to marine protection and global ocean awareness.”

As climate concerns rise globally, Four Seasons Resorts Maldives continues to lead by example - merging luxury with purpose, and designing experiences that leave both memories and meaning in their wake.
