Solar-Powered Yachts Are Floating Towards The Mainstream With Its Expansion

When Michael Kohler steered clear of diesel engines and opted for solar power instead for his boat engines in 2005, the idea seemed impractical considering the technical limitations. But after 5 years of inherent development and testing, Kohler’s Solarwave 46 went on to successfully become the first ever solar-powered yacht.

The Silent Yachts brand has since then proved to be better if not as good as traditional motor yachts. The benefits extend beyond just engine vibration and minimal emissions.

It offers more space than fellow competitors considering electric motors require less space as compared to diesel engines.

While the idea of solar powered yachts is till a growing concept, companies like BYD Group and Serenity Yachts are the best in the market offering cruising speed of 8 knots and top speed of 20 knots.

While this is great range for a solar yacht, the battery packs get quickly drained out at this rate.

For superyachts, two boats have currently chosen hybrid propulsion which are the 273 foot Savannah that was launched in 2015 and Feadship’s largest design, the 361 foot Anna that was launched in 2018.

Feadship director, Henk De Vries also developed classification rules for these yachts and aims to creating a mindset towards solar yachts where it undoubtedly becomes a conventional reality.
