JW Marriot opens a hotel in Kolkata

World’s most significant hotel brand, Marriott-Starwood combine, which launched its 81st hotel in Kolkata city in India on Tuesday, is preparing to start four more hotels by the end of 2017 in India as the nation continues to be second greatest market for it in Asia right after China.

Following Marriott International accomplished the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in September 2017, the merged enterprise gets to be the world’s biggest hotel company. Currently this US based hotel company is also the largest hotel company in the country with over 18,000 rooms.

The 24 storey luxury property, opened in Kolkata, is the 8th JW Marriott Hotel in the India. Marriott will be functioning this hotel, constructed by the city-based Mani Group with a a cost of around Rs. 1200 crore. This is the first hotel in East India launched by Marriott International.

“Marriott-Starwood combine will have 85 hotels in India by the end of this year. We are extremely bullish on India as the country is the second largest market for us in Asia after China,” said Rajeev Menon, chief operating officer, Asia Pacific (excluding Greater China), Marriott International.

Marriott-Starwood combine is likely to take total number of hotels it operates to over 160 in the country. “Another 85 hotels are under construction in India,” Menon said.

The hotel chain will open a property under its ‘Courtyard’ brand in West Bengal’s Siliguri by the end of 2017. It currently has 14 properties under Courtyard, which is an entry-level five-star brand, in India.

Neeraj Govil, area vice president , South Asia, Marriott International, said, “For the company, around 60% of total business is coming from domestic travellers, mainly from MSME segment, in India. We expect good hotel accupancy in Kolkata also as the city remains internationally connected with Hong Kong, UK and Middle East.”
