A Historic Landmark Undergoes Renewal

The towering golden GOOD MOTHER statue of the Virgin Mary, which has overseen Marseille and its maritime community for over a century, is scheduled for a gold-leaf restoration this summer. Positioned atop Notre Dame de la Garde, a church that was completed in 1864, the statue remains a defining symbol of France’s second-largest city.

Weather and Pollution Take Their Toll

Locally revered as the ‘Bonne Mère’ (Good Mother), the 11.2-meter statue last received a gold-leaf coating in 1989. However, years of exposure to strong winds, salty sea air, and industrial pollution have significantly worn down its radiant surface.

Meticulous Preparations for the Restoration

Architect Xavier David, who was responsible for assessing the statue’s condition, reportedly abseiled down all four sides to prepare for the extensive refurbishment. The restoration process is expected to begin in August, with artisans arriving to meticulously apply 30,000 new gold leaves.

Restoration Costs and Major Donors

The ambitious project carries an estimated cost of approximately 2.8 million euros (nearly $2.9 million). To fund the initiative, the Marseille diocese has been actively seeking donations. So far, key contributors include billionaire shipping tycoon Rodolphe Saadé, renowned liquor brand Pernod Ricard, and the city’s football team, collectively raising 1.3 million euros.

Public Participation Encouraged

The diocese has also invited the public to contribute by donating 50 euros, the amount required to cover the cost of a single gold leaf.
