Akshay Kumar Dazzles the Runway in Royal Splendour at India Couture Week

The 18th edition of Hyundai India Couture Week, organised by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) in collaboration with Reliance Brands, commenced from 23rd July and will continue till 31st July, 2025 at the Taj Palace in New Delhi. This spectacular week-long fashion celebration brings together 14 of India's most acclaimed designers, each presenting their unique take on couture. The event opened with a much-anticipated showcase by designer Rahul Mishra, who set the tone for the rest of the week with his latest collection, before witnessing Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar grace the runway as showstopper for designer duo Falguni Shane Peacock.

A Collection Fit for Modern Maharajas

The Falguni Shane Peacock presentation, hosted within this prestigious FDCI collaboration with Pearl Academy and Reliance Brands, transported audiences into a world of regal magnificence. The collection masterfully blended classic Indian couture featuring intricately crafted sherwanis, sophisticated bandhgalas, ethereal saris, and elaborately designed lehengas with an unexpected contemporary twist: couture jeans that redefined luxury casual wear.

Drawing Inspiration from Royal Heritage

Designer Shane revealed that the collection's creative vision stemmed from the lavish world of maharajas, where royalty permeated every aspect of daily life. The design narrative celebrated the jewels, palatial gardens, exotic birds, and architectural grandeur that defined India's royal legacy. Peacock motifs and palatial wall designs became central elements, while hand-woven Banarasi fabrics formed the foundation of their evolving aesthetic language.

The colour story unfolded through a sophisticated palette of soft pinks, elegant beiges, serene blues, and other muted tones that whispered rather than shouted luxury. Complementing the couture pieces, jewellery designer Archana Aggarwal created statement pieces that perfectly harmonised with the collection's royal theme.

Bridging Tradition and Modernity

The inclusion of couture jeans represented a bold creative decision, designed to resonate with younger, fashion-forward consumers while maintaining the collection's regal DNA. This strategic move demonstrated the designers' commitment to evolving Indian couture for contemporary lifestyles without compromising on craftsmanship or cultural authenticity.

Star Power on the Runway

FDCI Chairman Sunil Sethi couldn't contain his admiration for Kumar's commanding runway presence, confessing his own attempts to replicate the actor's signature walk, a feat he admitted was nearly impossible. Sethi praised Kumar's magnetic appeal, noting how the star truly elevated the entire presentation within this week-long celebration that featured India's finest designers.

A Royal Return to the Ramp

With characteristic humour, Kumar acknowledged the show's later-than-expected timing, drawing laughter when photographers explained that Delhi fashion shows traditionally run behind schedule. The actor nostalgically recalled his previous collaboration with Falguni Shane Peacock twelve years prior, expressing genuine honour at returning to walk for the designer duo at such a prestigious venue as the Taj Palace.

Kumar reflected on the immense effort required to orchestrate such grand productions, marvelling at how months of preparation culminate in a mere 25-minute showcase. When asked about his experience wearing the designers' creation, his response was unequivocal: he felt "nothing less than royal."

The Essence of Indian Luxury

This collection represents more than fashion; it embodies the evolution of Indian couture in the global luxury landscape. Following in the footsteps of the week's opening designer Rahul Mishra, Falguni Shane Peacock demonstrated how contemporary Indian designers are seamlessly weaving traditional craftsmanship with contemporary silhouettes, creating pieces that speak to both heritage and innovation, perfect for the modern consumer who refuses to choose between authenticity and relevance.

The evening concluded with Kumar expressing hopes for future collaborations, cementing what appears to be a perfect synergy between Bollywood glamour and haute couture excellence, while the week-long celebration at Taj Palace continues to showcase the very best of India's couture heritage.
